The Johns Creek Veterans Association (JCVA) seeks new members from the local veteran population to join us and to help make that difference. Many of our members served during the Second World War, Korea, and Vietnam eras and, although vigorous, we need younger veterans to help meet the myriad of challenges that veterans and their families continue to face; homelessness, quality healthcare and receipt of earned benefits; unemployment; anxiety, separation, and suicide.
Remembering the Fallen and honoring those who served are traditions within the veteran community. Recently, the JCVA completed the construction of the Johns Creek Veterans Memorial Walk, a four-acre privately funded park and contemplative walk located behind Park Place at Newtown Park, 3125 Old Alabama road, Johns Creek. This was a community effort and the result is the largest Memorial Walk of its kind in the United States. The project lasted just more than two years-time and enjoyed tremendous support from both corporate and private donors. In November, the Memorial Walk was turned over to the City of Johns Creek.
Our Color Guard remains our most visible presence in the community, presenting the Colors at various community and civic functions as well as in many parades throughout the North Atlanta area. We promote patriotism to our youth, reminding them of the many sacrifices required of service to the Nation. We maintain a Missing Man table at the Park Place facility in honor of our Prisoners of War, both men and women, as well as those still missing in action. Our members also serve the needs of our aging veterans, providing programming and entertainment to those who live in area senior care facilities. Our Veteran Service Officers provide much needed assistance to veterans and family members in securing benefits and care.
Membership is open to all veterans who served for at least 90-days active duty in any branch of the military during peace or war and received an Honorable Discharge. This includes those who served, or continue to serve, on Active duty, the National Guard, and Reserve components. Applications are available at Park Place or online and there is a two-hour orientation program that must be completed prior to being recognized as a member.
